Glacier National Park had been on our family’s bucket list for years, and after finally visiting two weeks ago, I completely understand why it’s one of the most breathtaking national parks in the United States.
The only downside? We only had one day to explore.
If you’re short on time, don’t worry—you can still experience some of Glacier’s most iconic scenery. We packed as much as we could into a single day, and these are the stops I would absolutely recommend if you’re planning a quick visit.
Tips Before You Visit Glacier National Park
If you’re planning your first trip, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Arrive Early
Parking fills up quickly at many of the popular trailheads and lakes. Arriving early in the morning gives you the best chance of finding parking and avoiding large crowds.
Check Vehicle Reservation Requirements
Depending on when you visit and which areas of the park you plan to drive, you may need a timed vehicle reservation in addition to your park entrance pass. Be sure to check the National Park Service website before your trip, as reservation requirements can change each season.
Download Offline Maps
Cell service is very limited throughout Glacier National Park. Download Google Maps or another offline map before arriving.
Pack Layers
Mountain weather changes quickly. Even during summer, mornings can be chilly while afternoons become much warmer.
Bring Bear Spray
Glacier is bear country. If you’re planning to hike, carry bear spray and know how to use it. It’s an important safety precaution for everyone on the trail.
Leave No Trace
Help preserve Glacier’s beauty by packing out everything you bring in, staying on marked trails, and respecting wildlife from a safe distance.
Stop 1: Lake McDonald
We started our morning at Lake McDonald, and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the most photographed places in Glacier National Park.
The crystal-clear water, colorful rocks beneath the surface, and towering mountains surrounding the lake make it feel almost unreal. If you’ve seen photos of Glacier online, chances are you’ve seen Lake McDonald. It’s known for its colorful “fruit pebble” rocks and reflects the mountains on calm days.
Spend some time walking along the shoreline, taking photos, or simply soaking in the views before continuing your drive.
Best time to visit: morning for calm water + reflections

Stop 2: Avalanche Lake
If you’re up for a hike, Avalanche Lake is one of the best family-friendly hikes in the park.
The trail winds through beautiful forest before opening up to a stunning alpine lake surrounded by towering cliffs and waterfalls. Reaching the lake was one of our favorite moments of the day. It took us about 1.5 hours to walk to alpine Lake. Gavin placed Millie in a carrier during the hike and she did amazing. She even managed to take a nap on the way back.
The hike is considered moderate, so wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks.

Stop 3: Goat Lick Overlook
This quick stop is easy to miss, but it’s worth pulling over.
The overlook is known for mountain goats that gather to lick the naturally occurring minerals from the rocks along the riverbank. Wildlife sightings aren’t guaranteed, but if you’re lucky, you may get to see several goats from a safe distance. We got lucky and got to see some goats from afar.
Even if the goats aren’t out, the river views alone make it worth stopping.

Stop 4: Two Medicine
Two Medicine ended up being one of our favorite areas of the park.
Compared to some of Glacier’s more popular spots, it felt quieter and less crowded. The lake is surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, making it a peaceful place to relax, take photos, or enjoy a picnic.
If we had more time, we easily could have spent several hours exploring this area.

Stop 5: St. Mary
We wrapped up our day near St. Mary on the east side of the park.
The drive itself is incredible, with breathtaking mountain views around nearly every corner. St. Mary offers beautiful overlooks and is a great place to end your Glacier adventure before heading out of the park.

Final Thoughts
Even though we only had one day in Glacier National Park, it quickly became one of our favorite places we’ve ever visited. Between the turquoise lakes, incredible mountain views, waterfalls, and wildlife, every stop felt postcard-worthy.
If you only have one day, I highly recommend visiting Lake McDonald, Avalanche Lake, Goat Lick Overlook, Two Medicine, and St. Mary. You’ll experience a little bit of everything that makes Glacier National Park so unforgettable.
I already know we’ll be back someday—and next time, we’ll definitely be staying longer.
